About
July 7: All state forest trails in the Snake Creek and Trout Valley Management Units are open
Snake Creek Management Unit is part of the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood Forest and is named for Snake Creek, a small trout stream that bisects the unit. Current state land ownership is 3,000 acres.
The topography of the Snake Creek Management Unit is rough. On either side of the valley, slopes rise 300 feet above the valley floor. Snake Creek trout stream, a designated trout stream, is located within the Snake Creek Management Unit.
The campsites are considered primitive, designed to furnish only the camper's basic needs. The campsites consist of a cleared area, fire ring, and table. Vault toilets, garbage cans, and drinking water are available.
There are two trail systems in the Snake Creek Unit.
Trail one is located on the valley's north side. A five-mile remote trail open for use by hikers and cross-country skiers, it varies in length and difficulty.
Trail two is located on the valley's south side. A 13.5-mile loop, this trail is open to all trail users except four-wheel drive vehicles.
R.J. Dorer State Forest OHV Trails: Snake Creek is open for OHV use May 1 - November 1.
Both trails have a parking area that's plowed in winter. The trail system is a multi-use system; check map for trail designation. Use caution and share the trail.
5 primitive campsites. First come, first served for individual sites; pay the camping fee online on the day you arrive, or at a state park ranger station. Managed from Parks and Trails Rochester area office (507-206-2847). In Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest.
