About
Wharton State Forest, New Jersey's largest state forest at over 122,000 acres in the heart of the Pine Barrens, is centered here on the Atsion Campground on Atsion Lake - 50 tent and trailer sites (max 22 feet) with potable water, flush toilets, and showers within walking distance, plus 9 separate furnished cabins. Nearby Godfrey Bridge offers 34 more tent and trailer sites (also max 22 feet) with potable water and pit toilets. The forest also contains several more remote, primitive camping areas reachable by hiking, canoe, or kayak - Batona, Bodine Field, Goshen Pond, Hawkins Bridge, Buttonwood Hill, Lower Forge, and Mullica River - each with fire rings and some with potable water, though their site counts are not published. All of Wharton's camping areas, including the historic Batsto Village and swimming at Atsion Recreation Area, are booked through this single park listing. Pet-friendly camping is available at the Atsion Family Campground, Godfrey Bridge, Goshen Pond, Buttonwood Hill, Lower Forge, and Batona Camp specifically, for an extra $5 per pet per night.
Fees
This park's own page does not list per-night camping fees for its Atsion, Godfrey Bridge, or primitive camping areas. New Jersey's standard statewide rate at comparable state forest campgrounds is $20/night for NJ residents and $25/night for non-residents, plus a $5 reservation fee - confirm the exact rate for each camping area before booking.
