Bass River State Forest, New Jersey's oldest state forest, surrounds Lake Absegami in the Pine Barrens near Tuckerton. The campground has 176 tent and trailer sites (no hookups), 6 group sites, 6 rustic shelters, and 9 lean-tos, open year-round, plus 6 separate furnished cabins. Flush toilets, showers, and an RV dump station (open March 1 through Nov. 30) are available. Pets are allowed at south-shore campsites 1 through 85 for an extra $5 per night; they are not permitted in the cabins, shelters, or lean-tos.
