About

Four numbered primitive tent sites on the Town of Westport's Cockenoe Island, a 27-acre island in Long Island Sound about a mile south of Seymour Point and the mouth of the Saugatuck River, reached only by boat. Three sites sit together on the northeast arm (the map point), with a boat landing on the arm's inner shore; the fourth is on the south cove by a second landing. Land only at the marked access points - the sand spit, dunes, bluffs and the wading-bird rookery are closed nesting areas. Each site takes up to five people and two tents; two consecutive nights maximum. No facilities: bring your own portable latrine, carry everything out, no glass, open fires in the camping areas only, quiet 11 pm to 6 am. Reserve by email with the Conservation Department at least 24 hours ahead, then mail or drop the signed application and payment at Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue; reservations are held one week until both arrive. Requests are taken from May 15, sites open Memorial Day weekend, and permits run through mid-October. Sites not occupied by 9 pm are forfeited for the night.
