About
Nestled in the heart of Manistee State Forest, this rustic equestrian campground offers direct access to extensive horseback riding trails (with varied terrain and water crossings for all skill levels) and state forest roads. Featuring 16 individual sites and a group area accommodating up to 108 people, the campground caters to tents and small trailers. A submersible pump is available, requiring a 5,000-watt generator.
The state forest campground is a stop along the Shore-to-Shore Trail, a 420-mile trail system open to hiking and horseback riding, that stretches east-west from Empire to Oscoda with two additional northern and southern spur trails. If a group would like to utilize multiple campgrounds along the Shore-to-Shore Trail, please contact the Cadillac Operations Service Center at 231-775-9727, ext. 6006. Thanks to the Michigan Trail Riders Association for helping to maintain the campground.
Located 5.5 miles north of Arlene via M-42 and Lucas Road, this campground is within a few miles of Hopkins Creek State Forest Campground.
16 equestrian campsites, $20 a night. Open all year; the road may not be plowed in winter. First come, first served; register at the campground kiosk on the day you arrive. Vault toilets and a hand-pump well for drinking water; no electricity or hookups. One camping unit and six people per site, 15 nights at most. Managed from Mitchell State Park (231-775-7911).
Also a group camp here (Hopkins Creek Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp); group rates apply.
