About

Wooded campground on Town of Portsmouth land in the Melville Park Recreation Area on Aquidneck Island, leased to and run by Newport RV Park (formerly Melville Ponds Campground), about five miles from downtown Newport, the Cliff Walk and Sandy Point Beach. 102 full-hookup RV sites with 30/50-amp electric, water and sewer on gravel, laser-levelled pads: premium pull-through sites F1-F13, standard pull-through sites 426-432 and back-in sites in the 100, 200, 300 and 400 loops, some shaded and some open. 13 rustic tent sites (350-361) on Sunny Way with a fire pit and picnic table each, one tent and one vehicle per site; tents are not allowed on RV sites. Three restored vintage Airstreams (1977 and 1966 Land Yachts and a 1972 Ambassador) and a three-bedroom, two-bath cottage are rented through Airbnb. Two bathhouses with free hot showers, coin laundry, free Wi-Fi and digital cable, camp store with ice, firewood and propane, dump station, open-air pavilion, playground, horseshoes, volleyball and basketball, fishing in the Melville ponds and direct access to the Melville Park trails. Up to two dogs per site, with the Portsmouth Dog Park a short walk away. Sites sleep two adults and three children; two extra adults $10 each per night. Check-in 1 pm, check-out 11 am; quiet hours 11 pm to 8 am; fires in the site ring only; no fireworks. Two-night minimum off season, three nights in peak season and on holiday weekends, four nights over the Newport Folk and Jazz festivals; stays of 15 nights or more pay metered electricity. RV sites are booked online, tent sites by phone. Open April 15 to November 1; tent camping April 15 to October 15.

2026: off season (April 15 - June 18 and September 14 - November 1) pull-through $80 and back-in $70 per night; peak season (June 19 - September 13) pull-through $130 weekday or $145 weekend, back-in $110 weekday or $135 weekend, weekly $795 pull-through or $695 back-in; holiday weekends three nights $425 pull-through, $395 back-in or $250 tent; Folk and Jazz festival weekends four nights $575 pull-through, $515 back-in or $350 tent. Rustic tent site $65 per night. Extra adults $10 each per night; dump station $20 for non-campers.
