About
Two primitive canoe campsites on Howard Island in the Connecticut River, about 2 miles below the Woodsville Bridge in Haverhill, on conserved Grafton County Farm land and run by the Upper Valley Land Trust with the Haverhill Conservation Commission as local steward. The map point is the northern site, reached up a moderately sloped cobblestone bank below an open hayfield and marked with yellow campsite signs; the southern site is about half a mile downstream at the island's southwest corner, landed from a dark sandbar in the slow backwater around the island's southern edge. Each site has a cleared tent area, box privy, and fire ring. Reached only by canoe or kayak - no access from land. First-come, no reservations; two nights maximum; suitable for larger groups. No fee, but $10 per tent per night is requested, with envelopes at the site. No drinking water - bring, filter, or boil.
