Trailhead West Mamm Trailhead Drive there

West Mamm Trailhead the Forest Service's write-up

No fee

The West Mamm Trailhead is located south of Rifle and provides access to the mid-point of the Battlement Trail . This is one of the Forest Service's closest access points to the City of Rifle, and the primary trailhead for exploring the Mamm Creek drainage. From the trailhead parking area, visitors can hike or ride 1.25 miles west to reach the top of Battlement Mesa. Alternatively, visitors can travel south and then east toward Middle Mamm and East Mamm Creeks. Either choice will lead visitors through serene forest with occasional breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Please note that this area is an active cattle allotment during the summer. Due to its lower elevation, the West Mamm Creek Trailhead may be accessible earlier in the spring and later in the fall than many other Forest Service recreation sites (but please check with your local Ranger District office before heading out).

About this trail's facts

The lines are the US Forest Service's National Forest System trails layer (public domain), read 2026-10-16 and simplified for the map; the length is the line's, end to end, and the class, surface, grade and tread width are the forest's own entries where it publishes them - a forest that publishes the centreline alone has none. The trailheads and the points along the way are the Service's recreation points, and the write-ups its own recarea text, unedited. Heights come from USGS 3DEP through Terrain Tiles on AWS (Mapzen/Tilezen), read along each line and rounded; a short trail on steep ground can be off by a few tens of feet. Closures change: check the forest's own site before you go.
