Coal Creek/Sawtooth Trailhead the Forest Service's write-up

Free

This Trailhead serves as the Southern access point for the Sand Creek Trail No. 1123 and the Sawtooth Trail No. 1165. Additional access to the Sand Creek Trail can be found at Sheriff Reservoir Trailhead .

The 10.4 mile Sand Creek Trail begins as an old jeep before crossing Coal Creek and continuing up the drainage. After 2.7 miles the trail comes to an open meadow and again crosses Coal Creek. Here an old pack trail continues up the West side of the drainage. After crossing, the trail climbs up and out of the Coal Creek drainage and emerges into the vast alpine meadow of the Little Flat Tops. This is a boggy area, characterized by bunch grasses and waist high willows.

After 5.2 miles the Sawtooth Trail splits off to the West. This 2.4 mile trail quickly crosses into the Flat Tops Wilderness and gives access to 12,133 ft Orno Peak and the headwaters of Trout Creek. This trail ends at a posted sign.

The Sand Creek Trail continues North for 2.2 miles and crosses back into a forest of Spruce and Fir. The last 3 miles of trail descend to Sheriff Reservoir, crossing Sand Creek and passing a series of small lakes.

Parking is limited at this location.

About this trail's facts

The lines are the US Forest Service's National Forest System trails layer (public domain), read 2026-10-16 and simplified for the map; the length is the line's, end to end, and the class, surface, grade and tread width are the forest's own entries where it publishes them - a forest that publishes the centreline alone has none. The trailheads and the points along the way are the Service's recreation points, and the write-ups its own recarea text, unedited. Heights come from USGS 3DEP through Terrain Tiles on AWS (Mapzen/Tilezen), read along each line and rounded; a short trail on steep ground can be off by a few tens of feet. Closures change: check the forest's own site before you go.
