Free, donations are accepted at Trailhead. · season July to Mid-October
*This trail usually is reachable from July through mid-October (Snow dependent)
*In the summer months, hikers and campers should come prepared with a variety of inspect repellant as the mosquitos are exceptionally thick in this area.
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
(although the hike is only 3 miles each way, the elevation change is over 1500’ and has steep switchbacks towards the latter part of the hike.)
Highest Point: 11,800 Feet
Trail Location: Stillwater Reservoir, Flat Tops Wilderness
The Hike: The Devils Causeway is a narrow strip of land that connects two major sections of the Flat Tops. Both sides of the trail are 60'-80' cliffs with steep talus slopes dropping another 600'-800' into the drainage below. The rough, 3' wide crest can be crossed on foot, but it is impassable for horses. The Devil’s Causeway's narrow rock ridge "land bridge" is roughly 50 feet long to cross. At roughly 1.8 miles Little Causeway Lake can be seen from a distance with the Devil's Causeway straight ahead. Looking due west is the Chinese Wall. The easy part of the hike is now over, and the 1,000 foot climb, crossing talus slopes and vigorous switchbacks begins in order to reach the Devil's Causeway ridgeline.
11 mile Loop: If you wish to make a loop with trails #1803 and #1120, the total distance is about 11 miles. It is recommended that you bring a map and compass and know how to use them as well as pack layers as the temps drop drastically.
Dogs: Dogs must be under immediate voice control or leashed at all times. Please be considerate of other hikers by cleaning up after your dog and not leaving fecal bags on the trail.
This unmaintained user trail is often used to connect the East Fork Trail No. 1119 to the Chinese Wall Trail No. 1803. The trail can be accessed out of the Stillwater Trailhead by taking the East Fork Trail 2.7 miles.
STAY ON THE TRAIL ! Due to this area being "loved to death" the alpine vegetation is very fragile. PLEASE do not take short cuts through the switchbacks, this causes more resource damage.
TAKE CAUTION: Lightning occurs nearly daily in the high country. Begin early and if lightning is in the area, return to lower ground
PET OWNERS: Pet waste must be packed out. Be respectful by not littering fecal bags on the trail. Dogs must be under immediate voice control or always leashed.
