About
Claytor Lake is a 4,500-acre reservoir on the New River known for sport fishing, boating, and swimming, with a full-service marina offering docking, fuel, and boat rentals. Four campgrounds range from big pull-through RV sites with hookups to smaller tent-friendly loops, plus a group tent site for up to 35 people; lodges, cabins, yurts, and a bunkhouse are also on site, not counted in the total above. The historic Howe House on the property has exhibits on the lake's ecology and history.
Fees
Virginia DCR statewide camping fee schedule (dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/camping-fees.php), per night, shown as VA Resident / Non-Resident, effective May 2025: Primitive/no-hookup sites $16-27/$19-27; Standard sites with water but no electric $27-32/$32-37; Electric & water sites $37-43/$43-49; Electric, water & sewer sites $41-43/$48-50; Group camping $75-134/$88-163. A $5 non-refundable transaction fee plus Virginia sales tax applies to every booking. Dump station use is free for overnight campers ($10/visit for day visitors); non-camper shower access is $5/person. Pets are allowed at this campground at no additional charge, on a leash no longer than 6 feet and kept under control at all times, per Virginia State Parks' statewide camping pet policy; current rabies vaccination is strongly recommended.
