About

Megunticook Cabin is a rustic, 20-by-40-foot backcountry cabin tucked into the woods at the junction of the Slope and Multi-Use Trails in Camden Hills State Park, about 2.5 miles from the campground's own parking area and 3.3 miles from Stevens Corner. Originally built in the late 1930s as a warming hut for a since-closed ski area, it was rebuilt in 2005 using lumber harvested on the property, complete with a fieldstone fireplace. Bunk beds sleep up to 6. There's no electricity or running water - a woodstove is the primary heat source, gas lanterns (hung from ceiling hooks) provide light, and an outdoor vault toilet is the only bathroom. Seasoned firewood is sold on-site. Two picnic tables, two hibachis, and a fire ring sit outside. Cell phone coverage is extremely poor in this part of the park, so plan accordingly. Reach the cabin on foot, bicycle, horseback, skis, or snowmobile only - there's no vehicle access of any kind. Leashed dogs are welcome; owners must clean up after their pets.

Fees

$54.50/night for the first six people, plus $5.45 per additional person per night (this rate already includes Maine's 9% lodging tax). Reserve up to a year in advance by calling Camden Hills State Park directly - this cabin does not book online through CampWithME.com the way the park's regular campsites do. Maximum stay is 6 nights/7 days; payment is by credit card or check at the time of your phone reservation.

Megunticook Cabin is bookable year-round, and winter stays here are real, not just nominal - the woodstove is described as the cabin's primary heat source, and winter access is explicitly by snowshoe, ski, or snowmobile along the same trails used in summer. There's no plowing or vehicle access at any time of year. Bring your own gear for genuinely cold, remote conditions - cell coverage near the cabin is extremely poor.
