About the US-278 Scenic Highway

This scenic byway is a 22 mile route located in Beaufort County. It begins at SC 170 at the Jasper County line and continues to the end of US 278 at Sea Pines Circle on Hilton Head Island.

It is a busy, but attractive multi-lane highway with landscaped medians, panoramic vistas and well-kept rights of way. Commercial development has mushroomed in recent years, but local ordinances have limited the impact by requiring set-backs, sign sizes/locations, and density limits.

About this page's facts

The line is the Federal Highway Administration's scenic byways layer (HEPGIS, a snapshot of 2022-06-24, a US government work), cut at the state line and simplified for the map; the length is the line's. The designation is the program's own: the national tiers from FHWA's America's Byways roster, the rest from the layer's designation field. Road conditions, closures and seasonal gates change: check the agency's own page and the state's road conditions before you go.
