About the Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway

With craggily canyons and vibrant red dirt, the earth around here looks a little different. The Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway is a landscape that is straight out of a western film. Whimsical wildflowers dot the route in the springtime, adding a burst of color to this otherworldly landscape. In the winter, a snow-covered mesa with a pop of rust-colored soil underneath feels like an unusual, but beautiful, sight. But this byway is more than a pretty face. The history of the area is preserved and ready for you to discover.

About this page's facts

The line is the Federal Highway Administration's scenic byways layer (HEPGIS, a snapshot of 2022-06-24, a US government work), cut at the state line and simplified for the map; the length is the line's. The designation is the program's own: the national tiers from FHWA's America's Byways roster, the rest from the layer's designation field. Road conditions, closures and seasonal gates change: check the agency's own page and the state's road conditions before you go.
